Groundwater Depletion

by Arpit

Water is the most significant commodity that exists on earth. But today, water is in danger. In recent years, we have experienced a shortage of water in many areas across the globe. In this article, we present the decline of groundwater levels worldwide.

Groundwater is a very useful resource to all of us. It is one of the principal sources of drinking water and irrigation. There exist many dry locations which do not get much rainfall. Groundwater is the only supply they can access. Groundwater plays a prominent role in the irrigation of water-hungry crops such as rice.

But today, groundwater is at risk. Many areas are experiencing a decline in groundwater levels. The water cycle plays an essential role to restore the groundwater levels. But due to human activities and over-extraction of groundwater, the water cycle is being disturbed. Rising temperature and greenhouse gas emissions also contribute to the decline in groundwater levels.

“Water covers two-thirds of the surface of the Earth, but Fresh water is only 0.002% on Earth.”

Causes of groundwater depletion-

  1. With the rise in technology, pumping the water requires less effort. Various super-fast pumps are being used to pump the water. It leads to the decline in groundwater levels as nature takes time to restore the groundwater level.

  2. We are using a large amount of groundwater in agriculture. With the rise in population, the demand for food is also increasing. But with the decline of groundwater, we are facing many issues.

  3. Global warming and the temperature rise are causing groundwater to deplete. Over evaporation is the result of rise in temperature level caused by global warming.

“A drop of water is worth more than a sack of gold to a thirsty man.”

Does it mean that we would not be able to control the situation of groundwater depletion? With specific steps, we can prevent the groundwater from getting exhausted.

In India, wells were used to store water. People were aware of the effort needed to get the water from the well. They felt the pain and hence used the water efficiently.

But today, we get water without any effort and pain. Hence, we do not feel any pain when we see water being wasted. Today, most people use more than two times the water needed for regular usage.

“SAVE WATER – Don’t waste the world’s blood.”

Technology is always a boon to society. But today, we are sad to say that technology is one of the primary reasons for the depletion of groundwater.

Let us take an oath to try our best to protect the groundwater. We will use every drop of water efficiently. Change yourself and see the world changing. Have a good and refreshing day.
